Since 1975, Dunwoody Senior Baseball has provided a place for middle and high school aged boys to play baseball in Dunwoody. Started for boys too old to play Little League, the program has grown to also include a Spring middle school league, Summer colleg
We are planning to sponsor the 19th year of our Middle School League (MSL) and our first in our new facilities at Peachtree Charter Middle School (PCMS). Here is the important aspects of this year's season:
New Fields. We will have two new artificial turf fields at PCMS with state of the art LED lighting. They will be called East Field (EF) and West Field (WF). The EF will be 315 down the line and 350 to center and the WF will be 300 down the lines and 315 to center. Both fields will be configurable to 54x80 and 60x90 play. Dugouts will be concrete block as they are on the existing UF. There will be a concession stand and much improved rest rooms including a family rest room. There will be 4 batting cages and off-the-field bullpens. One of the improvements we hope to make in the future is to cover 2 of the cages. We will miss the beautiful tree-lined setting of Dunwoody Park, but the park will be put to good use as the future site of Austin Elementary.
Construction Project. The City is paying $5.7 million for the project and construction is well underway. The current schedule calls for the fields to be ready for play on Feb 13. We have told the city we need the fields by Feb 1 for practices and the City and construction company are working to this goal. We will know more at the coach's meeting in January.
Facilities. We have the two fields mentioned above. In addition, we will use Field 5 at the Morgan Falls/Sandy Springs Youth Sports (SSYS) complex for practices and games. We will also be playing at various school fields including Pace, Davis, Sutton, Decatur HS, Wesleyan, and others.
Divisional Play. We will schedule games according to skill level. Last year we had 4 divisions of play. We will again play a few interleague games with Middle School League teams from Druid Hills, NYO and Central Dekalb. The A bracket is our highest level of play and plays 60x90. All others are 54x80.
Practices. DSB and SSYS will make its fields available for practices prior to and during the season. Last year the schools that had space practiced at their own schools, and those that did not practiced at DSB and Morgan Falls.
Rules. We use GHSA rules except in a couple of areas. The rules that are different from GHSA are field size, bat sizes (-9 for 7th graders, -5 for 8th graders, -3 for 8th graders in A bracket), 10 players in the batting order, and free substitution in the field. Please consult the web site for details. We will have a coaches meeting prior to the season to review league rules. We have changed the bat rules to require USA Bat approved bats or BBCOR bats.
Player Eligibility. This is not a travel league in which the teams are free to recruit any player they choose. Player eligibility rules are:
Public Schools. Players must attend the school or live in the boundaries of the high school to which it feeds.
Private Schools. Players must attend the school or if they are 8th graders must have an application on file with the school.
Private Schools as Part of a Church. If the school is part of a church (e.g. St Jude’s), children of registered members of the church are also eligible for the team.
Exceptions. Any exceptions to these rules must be approved in advance by the league.
Schedule. Each team plays 12 games followed by playoffs where teams are divided into brackets. Game times are 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM on weekdays, throughout the day on Saturday, and during the afternoon on Sunday. Games are limited to no new inning starting after 2 hours. No games are played during a school’s spring break.
DSB Park Team(s). DSB will form one or more teams from players who do not make their school teams or who attend schools that do not participate in the league. These teams will be coached by DSB volunteers. All players who try out will be assigned to a team. There will be a cost of $280/player. We are requesting that all teams finish selection of their teams by Jan 31 so that they can sign up for the Park team(s). Note: DSB offers a Spring League for 13-14 year olds and for older kids after the MSL ends.
Awards. T-Shirts are awarded to the top 2-3 teams in each tournament bracket.
Weather/Field Prep. Last year weather caused many games to be rained out. We hope that issue is in our rearview mirror as we are told we can play 20 minutes after it stops raining.
Cost. $2400 per team, which includes lights, insurance, balls, umpires, and scheduling. We will also open our concession stand. DSB will provide batting helmets and catcher's equipment as needed.
